Care for Complex Esophageal and Gut-brain Disorders

The Center for Gastrointestinal Motility at Brigham and Women’s Hospital provides advanced, team-based care for patients with complex esophageal, motility, and gut-brain interaction disorders.

Led by Walter W. Chan, MD, MPH, our multidisciplinary team includes expert gastroenterologists, an advanced practice provider, and a GI psychologist. We collaborate closely with specialists in pulmonology, otolaryngology (ENT), rheumatology, allergy and immunology, thoracic and general surgery, physical therapy, and nutrition to evaluate and treat a wide range of motility-related conditions.

We’re also leading research into new ways to diagnose and treat these conditions, which are becoming increasingly more common.

Conditions We Treat

Esophageal symptoms and disorders
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD)
  • Esophageal motility disorders (e.g., achalasia, diffuse esophageal spasm, ineffective esophageal motility)
  • Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)
  • Functional heartburn
  • Esophageal hypersensitivity
  • Rumination syndrome
  • Belching disorders
  • Swallowing disorders
  • Symptoms and dysfunction after upper GI surgery
Gastrointestinal motility disorders
  • Gastroparesis
  • Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction
  • Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth
  • Slow-transit constipation
  • Colonic inertia
  • Intestinal dysmotility
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction (e.g., dyssynergic defecation)
  • Anorectal disorders (e.g., fecal incontinence, rectal prolapse)
  • Symptoms and dysfunction after colon and rectal surgery
Disorders of gut-brain interaction
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Functional dyspepsia
  • Functional abdominal pain
  • Functional constipation
  • Functional diarrhea
  • Cyclic vomiting syndrome
  • Aerophagia

Advanced Testing and Procedures

At the Center for Gastrointestinal Motility, patients have access to cutting-edge diagnostic testing and procedures, performed in our specialized Gastrointestinal Motility and Physiology Laboratory. This lab is led by Dr. Walter Chan and Dr. Jennifer Cai.

These tests help us better understand how your digestive system is functioning and guide individualized treatment plans.

Diagnostic studies we offer include:

We also offer therapeutic endoscopic procedures at the Endoscopy Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital to treat certain conditions, including:

  • Endoluminal balloon dilation
  • Pneumatic dilation
  • Botulinum toxin injection
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Cryotherapy
  • Per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) (in collaboration with BWH interventional endoscopy)

To schedule a test or procedure, please call us at 617-732-6389.

Leaders in Education and Research

Our clinician-scientists are advancing the field through active clinical and translational research.

Some of our current areas of investigation include:

  • GERD and its extraesophageal effects, including lung complications, outcomes following lung transplantation, and laryngopharyngeal reflux disease
  • Esophageal motility disorders
  • Eosinophilic esophagitis
  • Functional gastrointestinal disorders
  • Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth
  • Anorectal and pelvic floor dysfunction
  • The impact of obesity on GI motility and function

In collaboration with our Mass General Brigham colleagues at Massachusetts General Hospital, we offer advanced fellowship training in neurogastroenterology and motility disorders. For more information about this exciting program, please .
