Living With a Colostomy, Ileostomy or Urostomy

If you had an operation to remove your bladder, colon or rectum, you may have an ostomy pouch to collect your urine or feces. You may have several questions about adjusting to life with an ostomy bag. Will your ostomy bag be noticeable to others? Can you return to your usual activities post-procedure? Rest assured, we're here to provide support. Please feel free to bring a list of questions with you to your appointment before surgery.  In the meantime, here is some information to get you started.

Physical Activities:

  • Engaging in most activities is possible after healing from colostomy or other type of ostomy surgery, though caution is advised in contact sports due to potential injury to the stoma (the opening in the abdomen.) Consult with your healthcare professionals for advice on protecting the stoma during sports.

Returning to Work:

  • Allow sufficient time for healing before contemplating a return to work.
  • Discuss a gradual return or a limited schedule with the employer if needed.
  • Seek guidance on protecting the stoma in jobs involving manual labor or lifting.

Disclosure of Ostomy Surgery:

  • The decision to disclose ostomy surgery is a personal one. Sharing with close family members and friends can provide emotional support. Gradual openness about the ostomy may occur as comfort with self-care increases.

Concealing the Ostomy Bag:

  • The ostomy bag is often less noticeable than you may think it is.
  • Techniques to minimize visibility include emptying the bag regularly and using supportive products.
  • Seek feedback from trusted individuals on the ostomy's visibility and sounds.

Clothing Choices:

  • No clothing restrictions exist for individuals with an ostomy bag.
  • Consider your body type and stoma location when choosing clothing for ideal comfort.
  • Explore different styles and specialized ostomy swimwear for added confidence.

Traveling with an Ostomy:

  • Pre-trip planning is crucial, but ostomy should not hinder travel plans.
  • Carry extra ostomy supplies and include them in both carry-on and checked bags.
  • A doctor's note explaining the ostomy may be helpful during security checks.

Intimacy and Relationships:

  • Sexual intimacy can continue after ostomy surgery, but recovery time is needed.
  • Temporary sexual side effects may occur, such as erectile dysfunction or vaginal dryness.
  • Discuss feelings with a partner and take steps to enhance confidence before intimacy.

Socializing and Dating with an Ostomy:

  • Attend support groups or connect with others with ostomies for advice and confidence-building.
  • Discuss concerns openly, adapting to life with an ostomy with shared experiences.
  • Disclosure of an ostomy to new companions is a personal choice, varying based on individual comfort.

Embracing life with an ostomy involves adapting to various aspects, and seeking support from others who share similar experiences can provide valuable insights and encouragement.
